Graduate Research Assistantship in Human Dimensions of Watershed Management

A Ph.D. level graduate research assistantship is available beginning as early as fall 2007 in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Project funding is anticipated to start in September 2007. The Department of Forestry offers graduate students an interdisciplinary learning experience in natural and social sciences, including fields such as land use planning, watershed management, forest recreation and community-based conservation. 

Project Title: Evaluating Watershed Health Risks through Integrated Water Quality Analyses, Community Capacity Assessments, and Outreach Appraisals  

Project Description:  This project is an interdisciplinary investigation of water quality and community capacity for planning and conservation with the overall goal of evaluating and communicating watershed and community health risks in eight sub-watershed communities. Research questions include,

• What is the capacity of urban and rural communities in the sub-watersheds to engage in watershed planning and adopt comprehensive conservation strategies?
• What capacity indicators are most strongly correlated with positive ecological, economic, and social outcomes?
• What barriers or constraints to coordinated planning and cooperative conservation exist?

 

Specifically the student will join a collaborative team of scientists to conduct community capacity assessments in two urban and six rural subwatersheds in the Lower Kaskaskia River of southern Illinois. Community capacity indicators will be examined including community leadership, institutional support, community resources, social cohesion, shared vision, and collective action. Specific tasks are to: (1) conduct a literature review, (2) inventory social networks, leaders, and watershed information resources in the study communities, (3) conduct and analyze focus groups and interviews with key informants, and (4) communicate study findings to the research team, community stakeholders, and other scientists.  

The graduate research assistant will work with a team of researchers including social and watershed scientists from SIUC and Illinois State University.

Assistant Professor -Fisheries Biology

Purdue University invites applicants for a position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Fisheries Biology.  This is a tenure-track, academic-year position that is functionally allocated between teaching and research.
 
RESPONSABILITIES:

Teaching - The successful candidate initially will teach courses in fisheries management, fish ecology, and participate in Natural Resources Practicum.  Development of a graduate course contributing to curricular objectives of the graduate faculty is desirable on an alternate-year basis.  Mentoring of students is expected. 

Research - The successful candidate will be expected to develop a dynamic, externally funded, internationally recognized research program that focuses on applied issues related to the conservation and management of aquatic resources.  Research interest may span levels of biological organization from sub-cellular to freshwater ecosystems.  We seek applicants who possess quantitative skills, embrace an integrative approach to science and welcome interdisciplinary collaborations.  Opportunities exist for collaborative research within the department in areas such as aquatic community ecology, land-use change modeling, disturbance ecology, metabolomics, ecological genetics, and aquatic ecotoxicology as well as university-wide initiatives in climate change (http://www.purdue.edu/climate ) and sustainability of ecological systems (http://www.purdue.edu/pices ).  In addition, there will be abundant opportunities to develop collaborative relationships with state (i.e. Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Management, and Transportation) and federal (i.e. U. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) agencies which support research initiatives.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  A Ph.D. in fisheries biology, or a related field, with a strong record of research productivity and teaching experience.    
 
SALARY:  Salary will be commensurate with experience and training.

Responsibilities:

    * Induces fish spawning and monitors development of eggs and fry.
    * Implements feeding schedules required for specified growth rates.
    * Cleans hatching tanks and raceways.
    * Implements water and feed treatments and prophylactic measures.
    * Loads, transports and plants fish.
    * Conducts hatchery tours and explains operation.
    * Assists in maintenance of hatchery equipment, buildings and grounds.

General Information:

Some positions require the incumbents to possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or be willing to obtain one within the six-month probationary period (see question #6 on the examination). For those positions requiring a CDL, incumbents must pass a pre-employment controlled substance screening test. Once a CDL is obtained, the employee is required to participate in the Department's drug/alcohol testing program and comply with all of its provisions. Failure to satisfy any of these requirements will result in a failure to complete the probationary period and termination from employment. Not all positions require a CDL.

Minimum Qualifications:

    * Good knowledge of aquaculture and ichthyology and the growing and maintaining of fish.
    * Some knowledge of report writing involving scientific or biological data and terms.
    * Experience: communicating orally in one-to-one and group situations; entering and retrieving data, preparing statistical reports, and using and maintaining various types of databases.
