Senior/Principal Scientist - Climate Change (The WorldFish Center)

The WorldFish Center, with administrative headquarters on the island of Penang, Malaysia, is a world-class scientific research organization. SENIOR/PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST - CLIMATE CHANGE

You will be a natural or social scientist with a PhD and strong track record of research related to climate change impacts, adaptation or mitigation in a developing-country agriculture or natural resource management context. Your research demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinarity and you have a strong track record in project or programme management and in securing research funding. You will lead the WorldFish Center's programme of research on climate change, so you will need to have an international profile as a climate and development researcher and be good at collaborating with others to achieve greater impact. A major part of your responsibility will be to co-ordinate the Center¡¦s role in the CGIAR CCAFS programme in South Asia and in East and West Africa and to ensure that science from this programme is published in leading peer-reviewed journals and is also taken up in adaptation and mitigation practice, to benefit poor and vulnerable people dependent on aquatic agricultural systems (AAS). AAS include fisheries, aquaculture, wetland rice, horticulture, coastal plantation crops, so experience of coastal or wetland agriculture or fisheries and aquaculture is an advantage. You will also provide intellectual leadership and technical advice to the Center¡¦s climate change research activities in SE Asia and the Pacific, and in Southern Africa, and help secure additional funding for its implementation. Finally, you will also strengthen the center's engagement with climate change policy development, for example by participating in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meetings.

Key Responsibilities:

* Act as focal point/coordinator for the WorldFish Center¡¦s engagement in the CGIAR-wide CCAFS programme
* Coordinate the linkages between CCAFS and the AAS programme, ensuring that climate change issues are mainstreamed in the latter, and that AAS issues remain prominent in CCAFS
* Represent the WorldFish Center at key global and regional climate change policy forums and at relevant international science conferences
* Build and sustain productive working relationships with key research, policy and implementation partners.
* Maintain the coherence, quality and relevance of the WorldFish Center's research programme on climate change
* Direct fund-raising activities for the Center's climate change research programme
* Build and mentor a team of researchers in WorldFish to ensure the entire Center's country offices (in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Egypt, Malawi and Zambia) have capacity to address the challenges of climate change.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

* Ability to provide intellectual leadership, technical guidance and inspiration to researchers across the Center working on climate change
* Proven record of scientific team leadership ¡V either of a research group, major project or programme.
* PhD degree and strong record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals related to climate change impact, vulnerability, adaptation or mitigation;
* At least 5 years experience of field-based social science or interdisciplinary research on issues of rural livelihoods, gender, poverty, agriculture or environmental management in developing countries; and
* Sound knowledge of current approaches and methodologies for climate vulnerability analysis, adaptation or mitigation.
* Record of fund-raising and/or securing successful competitive research grants
* Experience of engagement in national, regional or global climate change-related policy processes (e.g. UNFCCC, formulation of NAPAs)
* Broad knowledge of either fisheries/aquaculture or international development issues ¡V preferably both.
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams in project contexts and under tight deadlines.
* Excellent written and spoken English language capability.

Postdoctoral Fellow/Scientist (The WorldFish Center)

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW/SCIENTIST

If you hold a recent PhD in a discipline and subject related to rural development, natural resource management or climate change and are interested in helping rural people adapt to climate change, this position is for you. You need to be a good team player, with strong research design and analysis skills and a broad systems perspective that spans social and natural sciences. You also need strong field research skills and an ability to work in close cooperation with farmers, fisherfolk and local government and NGO staff. If you have used action-research approaches in your work, we particularly want to hear from you. Based in Dhaka, you will spend a large proportion of the time at the CCAFS programme field sites in Khula District in coastal Bangladesh, but will also travel to other areas within the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The position is available at either postdoctoral level (PhD and up to 2 years postdoc experience) or scientist level (PhD and more than two years postdoc experience) depending on skills, experience and qualifications. Postdoctoral positions are for two years, scientist positions are for three. At either level, the contract is renewable subject to performance and institutional need. Promotion to scientist/senior scientist is also available.

Key Responsibilities:

* In consultation with the regional office of the CCAFS programme on the Indo-Gangetic Plains and the WorldFish office in Dhaka, coordinate field activities of the CCAFS programme in Bangladesh, with an initial focus on the coastal area in the south-west, around Khulna.
* Assist in the design and implementation of field research to assess adaptation options in response to climate variability and change, with an emphasis on water resource and salinity management and the interactions between shrimp farming, rice farming and other agricultural practices.
* Manage the linkages between CCAFS and the AAS programme, ensuring that climate change issues are mainstreamed in the latter, and that AAS issues remain prominent in CCAFS
* Represent the WorldFish Center at key national and regional climate change policy forums and at relevant regional and international science conferences
* Build and sustain productive working relationships with key research, policy and implementation partners.
* Contribute to writing up project and programme reports and disseminating programme research findings through international peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

* PhD degree and strong record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals related to climate change impact, vulnerability, adaptation or mitigation;
* At least 2 years experience of field-based social science or interdisciplinary research on issues of rural livelihoods, gender, poverty, agriculture or environmental management; and
* Sound knowledge of current approaches and methodologies for climate vulnerability analysis, adaptation or mitigation, particularly in an agricultural development or food security context.
* Broad knowledge of either fisheries/aquaculture or international development issues ¡V preferably both.
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams in project contexts and under tight deadlines.
* Good coordination and facilitation skills, demonstrated through application in a multi-stakeholder context. Experience working within an action-research context is desirable.
* Excellent written and spoken English language capability.

Postdoctoral Fellow - Climate Change Economist (The WorldFish Center)

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW - CLIMATE CHANGE ECONOMIST:

Based in the Penang offices of WorldFish, you will provide support to the center¡¦s research programme on climate change, with a focus on designing and implementing impact assessment programmes related to climate change vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation in aquatic agricultural systems. You will have a PhD in economics, specializing in agricultural, natural resource, environmental or ecological economics in a rural development context. Ability to work in partnership with natural scientists and non-economist social scientists is essential, as are strong quantitative analysis skills. Experience of aquaculture or fisheries systems is an advantage, but not essential. The position requires extensive travel to WorldFish offices and research sites in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

Key Responsibilities:

* Provide technical guidance to WorldFish Center scientists and our research partners in national and regional institutions on the design, implementation and analysis of research on climate change vulnerability, adaptation options, mitigation and co-benefits approaches, including payments for environmental services.
* Design studies to analyze the impacts of actions to adapt to climate change, both ex-ante (looking at costs and potential benefits to guide choice of adaptation options) and ex-post (looking at the impact of adaptation actions undertaken)
* Represent the WorldFish Center at key global and regional climate change policy forums and at relevant international science conferences
* Contribute to writing up project and programme reports and disseminating programme research findings through international peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

* PhD degree in economics or related sub-discipline (development economics, environmental economics, economic geography etc) and publication record commensurate with experience;
* Sound knowledge of current approaches and methodologies for climate vulnerability analysis, adaptation or mitigation.
* Strong quantitative analysis skills, including either econometric analysis or economic modeling. A knowledge of impact assessment methods, and monitoring and evaluation programme design is an advantage
* Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams in project contexts and under tight deadlines.
* Excellent written and spoken English language capability.
